Store a jigsaw puzzle? Sounds easy, right? Crumple it up and shove it in the box….
Wait, that’s probably how we all stored a jigsaw puzzle when we were kids and our mom’s wanted a clean room. However, it’s not really how you should store a jigsaw puzzle after you’ve assembled the jigsaw and are putting it away. There is a reason why you need to be careful when you store a jigsaw puzzle, especially for a puzzle player.
With patience, perseverance, and a keen eye for detail, piecing together a jigsaw puzzle can be an immensely satisfying experience. Like putting it together, taking it apart can be just as fun!
However, once the final piece is placed, the question arises: what’s the best way to disassemble and store this masterpiece to ensure its longevity and preserve the cherished memories it represents? I’ve been exploring the art of dismantling and safeguarding jigsaw puzzles, as it’s important to me too. When you put away a jigsaw puzzle for later use, it allows you to relive the joy of assembling them time and time again.
Preparing for the Disassembly Process
Before diving into the disassembly process, it’s crucial to gather the necessary materials and create an optimal workspace. Here’s what you’ll need:
- A large, flat surface: Clear a spacious area, such as a table or the floor, to accommodate the assembled puzzle.
- Storage container(s): Invest in sturdy boxes or bags specifically designed for puzzle storage. Look for containers with dividers or compartments to keep puzzle pieces organized.
- Labels or markers: These will help you identify and organize puzzle pieces by section or category. I use black or blue markers that can be seen in a distance.
The Art of Gentle Disassembly
With your workspace prepared, it’s time to begin the disassembly process. Approach this task with patience and care, as rushing through it can lead to lost or damaged pieces. The idea to store a jigsaw puzzle is to make sure, in the future, you can play it again.
Divide and Conquer
Start by dividing the puzzle into manageable sections or patches. This could be based on color, pattern, or specific areas of the image. Gently lift each section and place it in a separate compartment or labeled container. I like to keep my pieces in sections. Consider it this way, you have a rectangle puzzle so I have 12 smaller rectangles that look like patches of pieces put together. I can easily stack or make flat these smaller areas.

Consider Complete Disassembly
While many jigsaw puzzle enthusiasts like to store their puzzles in sections, there are people who will completely disassemble the puzzle taking apart every piece. This action is also a great idea if you are thinking about donating the puzzle or selling it. That way whomever decides to play it next will have the complete puzzle experience. Or if you decide to practice with the jigsaw puzzle, it’s ready to play.
Inspect and Organize
As you disassemble each jigsaw puzzle and combine into sections, take a moment to inspect the pieces for any damage or irregularities. If you notice any issues, set those pieces aside for repair or replacement. Why do pieces get damaged? For the most part it’s because the jigsaw puzzle pieces rub against each other causing scratches, rips or chips.
Store a Jigsaw Puzzle: Keep Your Treasures
Once your puzzle is fully disassembled to your satisfaction, it’s time to store it properly to ensure its longevity and preservation. Obviously where you store it is important but how you store it is more important so elements like humidity, air and even mold doesn’t get into the puzzle.
Choose the Right Container
Select a storage container that is sturdy, dust-proof, and moisture-resistant. Avoid using plastic bags or containers that can trap moisture, as this can lead to warping or mold growth over time. There are a number of low cost or no cost options to consider.
Use containers that won’t allow light to warp the jigsaw puzzle pieces. It’s important that the light doesn’t damage the pieces, especially if the container is set in a sunbaked area.
Label and Categorize
Clearly label the storage container with the name of the puzzle, the number of pieces, and any other relevant information. This will make it easier to identify and locate the puzzle in the future. You might want to include the front of the puzzle box when you label the container either by using the box image itself or making a photocopy of the image to fit into the area you have on the container.
If you have multiple puzzles, consider categorizing them based on theme, difficulty level, or personal preference. This will help you easily find the puzzle you want to assemble next without having to search through all your storage containers.
Protecting the Puzzle Surface
To prevent the puzzle surface from being scratched or damaged while in storage, place a soft cloth or felt mat on top of the puzzle before closing the container. This will provide a protective barrier and keep the puzzle pieces in place. It will also help if any moisture comes into the container.
Storing Puzzle Pieces
If you prefer to keep the puzzle pieces separated, consider using small, resealable bags or plastic containers with dividers for sectioning out the jigsaw puzzle. This will prevent the pieces from mixing together and make it easier to assemble the puzzle again in the future.
Alternatively, if you want to keep the puzzle fully assembled, you can use puzzle preservation sheets or adhesive paper to secure the puzzle surface. Simply peel off the backing of the adhesive paper and carefully press it onto the back of the puzzle. This will keep the puzzle intact and prevent the pieces from shifting. You may want to consider gluing the front of the puzzle as well.
Finding the Perfect Storage Space
Choose a storage space that is cool, dry, and away from direct sunlight. Avoid areas that are prone to temperature fluctuations or high humidity. These conditions can damage the puzzle pieces and cause warping or discoloration.
Displaying Your Masterpieces
If you want to showcase your completed jigsaw puzzles, then you probably should glue and frame the puzzle. This was you can hang it on the wall as a piece of artwork. There are specialized puzzle frames available that allow you to easily mount and display your puzzles. Find those at craft stores and puzzle stores.
Another option is to use puzzle glue or adhesive sheets to permanently preserve the puzzle. Once it is set, then mount it on a foam board or backing. This will create a sturdy display that can be propped up on a shelf or displayed in a frame.
I have Hundreds of Jigsaw Puzzles in Storage
Preserving the memories and joy of completing a jigsaw puzzle is an art in itself. I have hundreds of puzzles and every time I store a jigsaw puzzle I think about the fun I encountered playing. My hope is to play it again in the future too.
Whether you choose to display your completed puzzles or keep them safely stored, the art of preserving jigsaw puzzle memories will allow you to relive the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment that comes with completing each puzzle.
